My name is Vicki Oppenheimer

Vicki Oppenheimer died on 9 September 2007 at the age of 99. Her site will be updated with an obituary and biographical material in the near future.

Many messages of sympathy have been received and are listed here. Her son Bill's Memorial Address is here.

For the present the following material remains unchanged.

Actually my legal name is Violet, but all my friends know me as Vicki, so that is how I am referred to here.

Welcome to my Web site. Here are some of the items that I hope you will enjoy.

A selection of some of the book reviews that I have written for various newspapers.
Here is something ~ I've written a book called The Taste Makers. It was published in December 2003 - and you can read it on the web. The web version is not as nice as the book is, but you can read the content and decide whether you want to buy the book or download it for free! (printed copies are now available from the publisher, and the cost is probably about the same as it would cost you to print the free version.) I have had several book signings at the Barnes & Noble in Naples. Recently I visited my son in the Algarve and had a couple of signings in Portugal.
An early collection of recipes
Information on my environmental interests.
And at the insistence of my family, some tidbits that they find interesting.

You may also be interested in learning about my first book on the history of food, called On the Nature of Food. It combines my interests in gastronomy, history, and anthropology. I like to think of it as much more than a cookbook! It has been revised and reprinted by Milpah Press, which also published my new book, The Taste Makers in conjunction with the Florida Literary Foundation. (Click on the poster to the left to see it enlarged.) I have held book signings in Florida and in Portugal.

This site is a bit disorganized, so you may find it helpful to consult the Table of Contents.

I'm also writing material for the Web page of my late husband, Armand Oppenheimer, with the help of my son, William Silvert. You will find much of interest on their Web pages.

For my friends who may want to keep track of me and my activities I also have a personal page.
